How to Register to Vote
Who Can Register to Vote?
You can register to vote in California if you are:
- At least 18 years old by Election Day
- A US Citizen
- A California resident
- Not currently serving a state or federal prison term for the conviction of a felony (for more information, please see Voting Rights: Persons with a Criminal History), and
- Not currently found mentally incompetent to vote by a court (for more information, please see Voting Rights: Persons Subject to Conservatorship).
You can pre-register to vote if you are:
- At least 16 years old
- A US Citizen
- A California resident
- Not currently serving a state or federal prison term for the conviction of a felony (more information for individuals with criminal convictions or detained in jail or prison)
- Your voter registration will become active when you turn 18
Voter Registration Deadline: 15 days before Election Day
How Do I Register to Vote?
Use the California Online Voter Registration System
Paper registration forms are available at the Registrar of Voters Office, U.S. Post Offices, Public Libraries, the Department of Motor Vehicles, and other government offices. Signed & completed forms must be returned in person or by mail. They cannot be faxed or e-mailed.
